My wish for all of you with my writing is that I am able to in some small way share the many reasons that I find Mexico so completely special. And that you will be able to share with me in some small part my challenges, joy, growth and so much more.
Doug Keller friend and yoga teacher discusses in his workshops the yogic concept of Spanda. It’s a Sanskrit word and Sanskrit like Spanish has deep meanings in many of its words. Spanda as Doug translates is the twinkling of a dew drop on a leaf. It’s a glimmering of awareness. It is expansion of feeling and expansion of consciousness where the mind becomes so still that we experience this flash of awareness. As yogis we strive at becoming connoisseurs of Spanda. I feel as though this Mexico journey provides for me and for Jake the space and environment in which we can become a connoisseurs of spanda.
I’ve lived long enough to experience when life moves in the flow or not… When you are living in flow with the universe…doors open, opportunities appear, things just have a way of working out. Not necessarily with out challenge, but without excessive stress…road blocks, and too many disappointments. And this move to Mexico is a perfect example of moving in the flow and it turning out to be exactly what we “should” be doing.
Jake had orientation last Friday at his new school the Institute de Tepeyac and within 5 minutes I met a mom who loves yoga… happened to have friend(ed) me on facebook as a recommendation from her yoga teacher, has a son the same age as Jake, signing up for the same sports: soccer and basketball, and her son also bilingual was a new student this year. We hit it off instantly, Jake was invited over yesterday to hang out with Bobby. So I dropped Jake off for his first day, dressed in navy blue bermuda’s, a white polo, back pack and 50 pesos for lunch at 7:10am… and he already has one friend. Bobby’s mom called me yesterday and suggested that we be there for each other if we ever get in a bind or need help with car pool pick up, running late etc.
Here’s to living in the right flow of energy.

It’s funny…life…that is…I have spent my entire life resisting writing…It’s like the minute someone suggested I write, journal, etc. I would throw up a road block. Resist and run the other way…Now, that I am embarking on the journey to live my first year in Playa del Carmen, Mexico I’ve have been blogging in my head for the first week. So here goes, please follow along if you like and I’ll keep you up date on the life of a single yogi mom living her first year in a foreign country with kid, cat, and open heart in tow…
We arrived last Saturday night. And as in the tradition of foreign countries and especially Mexico we didn’t actually slip right through customs with ease. We had 3 fifty pound suitcases and 1 seventy pounder ( I found out golf bags can be 70), 2 carry on roller bags each at least fifty pounds, (try putting those over head and acting like they weigh thirty) 2 back packs and one carry on cat. Our beloved Tiger (now re-named Tigre). Turns out the Dallas vet left off one important fact required on the health certificate so we were stopped. Had to wait in customs for awhile, which actually was an interesting experience. I now am an expert on what items, food related etc. you cannot bring into Mexico.
Any old way, we had to get a vet from Cancun at 9pm to come to the airport. Jake says it was a like a Burn Notice episode. (our new favorite tv show these days). The vet basically showed up, pretended to give Tiger some medicine, filled out a form and $75 later we were happily on our way. And that wonderful distraction kept us from the full blown possible search and so mother (me), son (Jake) cat (Tigre) and our Beverly Hillbilly’s style caravan were on our way and with my illegal chickpea flour.
Lots more happened this week but I’ll save the other stories for later… One involves driving through the city of pineapples and topes sales people.
